| Setting and following a good example is tough. This holds true for practicing what one preaches. George Washington forbade swearing in the United States Army but yet was known for frequently using swear words. We learn by example; "monkey see, monkey do." "Common sense" should tell us what we should and should not do but more often than not, unclear areas appear. When ethics laws come into play, it is especially tough considering that a judgment must be made. It is not about what is legal but what is right and Washington State employees have a duty to function for the people of this state. This means that the public’s interest is always first and foremost. As do other state agencies, The Executive Ethics Board (EEB) must prioritize its limited resources. As a result, the EEB and the Department of Personnel (DOP) have partnered to provide ethics training to state employees. The training is designed to help employees gain a better understanding and become aware of acceptable ethical behavior. Trainers contracting through DOP are also available to provide training in the agency. Please contact DOP at 360-664-1921 for specific information or visit the link below: Ethics in State Government --- 01-14-EPF2 DOP also offeres training to managers, supervisors, ethics advisors and HR staff. This course is called "HELPII: Ethical Leadership and Decision Making" (01-09-M504).
